Playing around with being creative again inspired by @blinklettering and her awesome watercolour backgrounds for her lettering! Milly from @blinklettering and Natalie @sketchandstoryuk have a challenge running at the moment to combine watercolour and lettering for the #blinkandstory challenge. This week it’s all about Bold on Blends so I had a go at blending some watercolours to create this galaxy effect. Pretty easy to just have a go at this one, it didn’t need to be too precise. After that I used a @pilotuk Pintor paint pen to add some lettering on top and some tiny tiny stars ✨ If you’re interested in getting started with lettering but feeling intimidated make sure you join me on Sunday at 11am (BST) over on @oopsadaisyuk Instagram account where I’ll be teaching you some tips to get started with #basicbeginnerlettering 🖊 One of the most important aspects of learning to hand letter is to build your confidence. Brush lettering is actually quite a fiddly technique to master and I definitely needed to take my time to get to a point where I felt like I could use it with confidence. In the mean time I recommend using false lettering and trying out other more basic font styles which can actually look really effective. Make sure you join me on Sunday with @oopsadaisyuk and I’ll be showing you some of my favourite simple hand lettering techniques for beginners 🌼 If you really can’t wait for Sunday remember I have a Skillshare class all about Basic Hand Lettering for beginners! You can get there via the link in my Instagram bio and scroll down to the bottom of the page to go to the class page! 😁 I hope you all have a lovely creative weekend and remember if you want to try out Bullet Journaling my last workshop of the month is tomorrow at 10am!!! 🥳

Repost @64millionartists Day 27! 🎨😍 Today’s challenge is set by Angela Jones, a tutor who works with a group of adults with learning disabilities. Today, she invites you to get creative with words and pictures. What story does your chosen picture tell? Choose a picture - it could be a photograph, from a magazine, a postcard, a piece of art or something you've found on the internet. It might even be from a cereal box! What can you find that inspires you or grabs your attention? Choose as many words as you can that describe what you see, or what the picture makes you feel, then write them down in a list to create a poem that describes that picture. You could write on top of the picture, or on a new sheet of paper. . . . . #alphabetlettering #letterings #letteringinspiration #alphabet #abc #alfabet #letterlove #handlettered #handletteringnewbie #handletteringinspiration #handletteringcommunity #dailylettering #typespire #chameleon #chameleonpens #chameleonmarkers #colorfullettering #letteringdesign #letteringcommunity #moderncalligraphy #letteringart #letteringartist #everydaycreativity #createeverday #alphabetchallenge #alphabetletters #artpractice #letteringpositive #letteringpractice

Happy Thursday everyone. What is everyone up to today? It’s scorching sunshine here so I’m working on some mission and vision statements for a client in the garden with a coffee in my hand and a sausage dog on my feet - happy place 🌸 . . The gorgeous rose we planted with my Jasper’s ashes is also blooming and beautiful, I love feeling like he is here with me as well, exactly where he would normally lie on the patio in the sun ❤️ . . I don’t have a picture of our rose so I’m sharing these beauties by @the_edge_of_elsewhere instead, aren’t they stunning? 🌷

Did you do ballet dancing as a kid? Did you have dreams of being a ballet dancer, gracing the stage? You can still tap into that feeling, remembering what is what that excited and fascinated you about ballet. Try this playful idea at home: Turn an ordinary task you do everyday into a little ballet, like when you are making a cuppa tea. This comes from our 'Daily Acts Of Creativity' Podcast for Students, but we are all students in life and so give it a go. This one is a grab from Activity Seven, called 'A Little Ballet'. (Hosted by the fabulous Creative and Performing Arts Teacher, Fiona Corcoran) Why would want to do this? Because a creative life is built on many moments of playfulness, joy and spontaneity, being in those moments builds a muscle for creativity while dampening down the feeling of 'looking bad or weird'. You are at home, no-one is watching, limber up your long forgotten ballet muscles. 👆Subscribe to our podcast, find it in your fav podcast app or click the link the bio. Amanda 💞

#tbt If there's one thing I'd love to be able to do really well, it's to paint in watercolour. It is the opposite of how I instinctively work and seems to rely on less is more and allowing the medium to do its random thing and make many happy accidents. This was an experimental puffin for my early @makeartthatsells sketches (I STILL need to finish this project 🤦🏼‍♀️) and I didn't do any preliminary pencil drawing, just got straight in there with the paint. I like bits of it - the tummy and the feet. I used to share a studio with Kate @watercolourdiaries and watching her work that tricksy wet stuff was both mesmerising and inspiring. What would you most like to get really good at?

A Picture Paints 1000 Words. Today's challenge is from @64MillionArtists and Angela Jones If you have more time ... can you find a creative way to recreate your picture? This is post 2 of 2 in response to today's challenge. The painting I chose for today's challege is 'A Hind's Daughter' by Sir James Guthrie (1883) which is one of my favourite paintings. (image 2) Guthrie is considered to be one of the second wave of Glasgow Boys and his work can be described as 'Scottish Realism' which followed on from the earlier French Reaslists. 'A Hind's Daughter' is owned by the National Galleries of Scotland, as is 'Pas Meche' by Jules Bastien-Lepage (1882), a painter who's influence can be seen in Guthrie's work. (image 3) Realist painters wanted to capture people and objects in their natural environment, using the tones and lighting of the landscape to describe the world as it is, rather than a romanticised version of it. I have a painting in my dining room that was painted over a hundred years later in the late 1980s by my sister (@julia.laing.art @julialaingstudio) which is another of my favourite paintings and has echos of the muted colour palette and tonal range of the 19th Century Realists and is the portrait of an art student, painted by another art student - two young women at their daily work. (image 4) The first image is my take on the original. Here I am 'The Health & Safety Inspector's Wife'. My palette isn't muted and my natural environment isn't very natural. In my hand is the shop bought loaf of bread and I have a knife ready to spread it with something. My kitchen is messy because I'm spending too much time thinking about creative challenges and not enough tidying and washing dishes! #CreateToConnect #64MillionArtists #APicturePaintsAThousandWords #Words #Pictures #Poem #EverydayCreativity #StayHome #painting #words #ScottishRealists #SirJamesGuthrie #JamesGuthrie #RealistArt #AHindsDaughter #HindDaughter #ScottishArt #creativityinspiredbyart #GlasgowBoys #FrechRealists #Bastien-Lepage #PasMeche #NothingDoing #JuliaLaing #HistoryofArt #ScottishRealism #RealisminArt

The Hind's Daughter, doing something she's often done. Cutting the kail off at the stalk but this time she is observed. The artist must have asked her father is his girl could pose, just so, for a painting of an ordinary girl, doing ordinary work, so the less ordinary people could judge his skill in capturing her naturalness. The light. The rustic scene. Did she ever see the finished work? I look upon her still. Captivated by her gaze, direct and strong. She is also the observer, watching him and us. A strange day's work. I wish I knew her name. #CreateToConnect #64MillionArtists #APicturePaintsAThousandWords #Words #Pictures #Poem #EverydayCreativity #StayHome #poetry #painting #poemsinspiredbypaintings #words #ScottishRealists #SirJamesGuthrie #JamesGuthrie #RealistArt #TheHindsDaughter #HindDaughter #ScottishArt #Poetryworkshop #creativityinspiredbyart #GlasgowBoys

Can we talk about creativity? Everyday creativity in particular. I like that modifier in front because it takes the notion of creativity off the pedestal and makes it accessible, real, non-competitive. These, to me, are qualities at the heart of creativity. When creativity takes root in the reality of your life, it stretches your skills and imagination. It can be a vehicle for connection. * Envy eats away at creativity. As does focus on "results," be it some sort of fame or perfection. * Every now and then I rewatch Jim Jarmusch's "Paterson" because that movie articulates a nourishing and believable vision of everyday creativity. It also features a protagonist who, like me, goes to work every day and sneaks creative work into the nooks and crannies of the workday. I relate to Paterson's insecurities but even more so to the joy of finding creative possibilities in the world and supporting creativity in others. * In my activity on IG, I keep seeking out opportunities to support others in their creative endeavors. I want to see creativity taken off the pedestal--creativity for everybody. * How do you think about creativity? What makes you feel creative? * PS: I owe a lot to Felicia Semple's writing on creativity rooted in everyday life. I encourage you to look it up on "The Craft Sessions" blog. * #everydaycreativity #creativity #creativityforeverybody #thecraftsessions #createthealternative #createcommunity

The last squeeze: Now we have moved into ever so slightly more stable times in Australia, good wholesome food has provided a new level of creativity and inspiration for my cooking despite being in such a bewildering cycle of unease and burden during a global pandemic. I spent a great deal of time sourcing produce from local farmers and organic stockists of Australian products who were kindly still able to deliver. Before COVID we regularly traveled on weekends to the regions for family outings to orchards, markets and parks (you get the idea). Then the supermarkets went crazy and I felt compelled to support our economy here in as many ways I could and has become so important to me not to mention how incredibly tasty our home foody experiences have become! So to honour the producers I've found and now cherish to provide amazing ingredients. I've tagged them here to say thanks! Who makes something amazing near you? I've got a question in my stories please let me know! Thanks 💛M ☕🍓

Repost @64millionartists Create to Connect - Day 25! @koestlerarts is a charity that encourages people in the UK's criminal justice system to participate in the arts. During the Covid 19 lockdown they’ve been publishing weekly Art Aid inspiration. Each Art Aid sheet has activities, and every activity can be done in a prison cell, with very limited materials and space. Think of a walk you can remember very clearly. Take some time to sit and think about it. Then write the most vivid and detailed description you can, taking the reader on a walk with you. It might be down the corridor, down the street or up a mountain. A walk through the countryside, along a beach, or through a town… Try to include description that involves the senses – what can you see, hear, smell, feel and even taste in the air? Have fun! That's why I'm excited much.⠀ ⠀ This is an excellent problem to have, and not one I've had to deal with in my lifetime ( which has been quite long BTW).⠀ So now, I've ordered a larger run to fill the current orders and heaps more. ⠀ ⠀ Because I choose to self-publish my book and basically start a publishing company to get it into your hands, it's a wee bit scary. ⠀ ⠀ But because of all you supporting, buying and reading the book and more importantly, finding your own way to practice everyday creativity, I feel ok about pressing GO on a large print run.⠀ ⠀ The company printing the books have been amazing and send me lots of progress shots of the production, (check out my stories to see what's been happening). ⠀ ⠀ Now it's the wait for delivery, which is still a few weeks away, enough time to clear out the garage to make room for all those books! Ha ha, only kidding! 🤣⠀ ⠀ 💌 Don't worry - you can still order your book from the website - but please note, delivery will be approx 3 weeks away.⠀ 👂In meantime, you can start your daily practice with the Podcast, it's for students and students of life! Get it on your fav podcast app.⠀ ⠀ You are amazing!⠀ Amanda 💞⠀ ⠀ #dailyactsofcreativity

Daydream Believer. Today's challenge is from @64MillionArtists and @koestlerarts Think of a walk you can remember very clearly. Then write the most vivid and detailed description you can, taking the reader on a walk with you. The Public Park 🌳 I'm lucky that I live close to 3 parks. Although Pittencrief Park is the biggest and lovliest of them, I can also walk through Rex Park to get to Asda and the Public Park to get to the High Street. I don't drive so it's important to me to live somewhere it's nice to walk around. My work is a train journey away and the station is a short walk away, but too often when I get there the train has been cancelled, and I immediately have to set off on a stressed march up through the Public Park to the bus stop. The park usually is somewhere that I cherish but in that early morning dash I curse the fact that the hill gets steeper the farther along the path you go. The rule also seems to be that the train is only cancelled in bad weather so usually I am also fighting through wind and rain. Despite that I'm getting hot and sweaty under my jacket as I head up towards the beautiful bandstand which sits about 1/3 of the way up. I love the bandstand, but skirt it quickly. There's usually only a few people around because I've missed the school-run rush. The next 1/3 is an uphill slog which always makes me curse how unfit I am these days but once I hit the highest point I can speed up for the final 1/3. This bit is often the most stressful though as I'm watching out for the bus going past before I can get to the bus stop. It's probably 50/50 whether I miss the bus before I get to the stop but it feels at the time like I've ALWAYS just pointlessly rushed through the park when I could take my time and actually enjoy the beautiful scenery. The next bus is only a 10 min wait so the stress is actually pretty pointless but I feel myself getting sucked into it every time! Not a very vidid description of the park ... but what's more vivid to me is the feeling as I rush through it. #CreatetoConnect #64MillionArtists #KoestlerArts #ArtInPrisons #EverydayCreativity #Creativity #Writing #Dunfermline #PublicPark #DunfermlinePublicPark

Happy Birthday to legendary actor @ianmckellen ! This sketch from 1983, was inspired by an RSC production of Macbeth starring Ian McKellen and Judi Dench. Macbeth was the O Level text that year! The performance made a lasting impression on me (artist educator Kamaljit). . . #everydayart #art #artsandculture #portraitdrawing #portraits #getcreativeathome #youthart #youtharts #lotr #everydaycreativity #creativity #artattheheart #collaboration #artclass #artclub #childrensart #childrensartclasses #community #birminghamartist #birminghamartists #westmidlandsartists #creativityandwellbeing #birminghamarts #artshealthwellbeing #artshealth #macbeth #shakespeare #royalshakespearecompany

6000 Minutes Day 91. Some black and brown quilting. I was planning to stop with black and brown now and switch to white. I hadn’t realized that I had quilted a “stripe” across the piece. Should I add some more dark quilting to make it less even? What do you think?

I’ve just finished the @makeartthatsells May bootcamp assignment 😊 The task was to create an illustration suitable for a jigsaw puzzle using paisley. For anyone that knows the sort of work I do for Intrinsic, this was well within my comfort zone. It was so relaxing to do, swipe across to see the process, I think it’s pretty fun to watch the pattern build up. Hope you’re all having a good start to the week. Now to write my next blog post, I’m a bit behind (my personal) schedule, but I’ll have it ready for tomorrow evening 😊👍 🧡💛💖 ⠀⠀ #adelaideartist #adelaideillustrator #creativehappiness #everydaycreativity #sandragalestudio #sandragaleillustration #makeartthatsells #matsbootcamp #matsbootcamp2020 #sparkleofhappiness #mandala #paisley #the100dayproject #100daysofillustration #100daysofillustrationbysandra #colourlove #artforjigsaw #pattern #surfacedesign #ipreview via @preview.app

Create to Connect - Day 25! Have fun! I originally got into regrowing veg from veg, instead of from seed, after watching the video that I share at the bottom of my latest blog post (link in bio - click on 'inspirations'). Since lockdown began, I’ve started growing more edible plants than ever. This is partly because, in  the early stages, we weren’t allowed to spend as much time outside in nature as I usually would, so I had to bring even more of it inside. It was also because we massively upgraded the quality of the fruit and veg we were eating by signing up to an organic veg box delivery service from @root22_organic_liverpool, so I thought I’d have a go at regrowing a few things. And by the way I highly recommend checking out Root 22 if you’re local to Liverpool (you'll find a link to their site from my blog post) . My favourite edible plant at the moment is my enormous horseradish; I wanted to make an immune boosting fire tonic last winter but couldn’t find organic horseradish anywhere, then I read that it’s easy to grow. Turns out it really is. I ordered organic starter roots (amusingly known as horseradish thongs) from eBay and now have two plants on the balcony. I’ve been adding the huge leaves to salads and they are so tasty, if you like the strong taste of horseradish that is! Images of their progress also available on the post. Check it out! #everydaycreativity #balconygardener #balconyvegetablegarden #mindfullivingUK #mindfulnessblog

I’ve been taking a few different online art classes lately and am loving trying different techniques. I created this for @makeartthatsells bootcamp March assignment. I was so happy with how it turned out I had it printed on canvas. I think it looks super cute and just need to find a home for it. Thinking about having a play with doing more abstracts. Thanks @lillarogers for such a fun assignment 🧡💖 And now best I get stuck into finishing the May assignment! 💖🧡💛 #adelaideartist #adelaideillustrator #canvasartprint #abstractartwork #creativehappiness #everydaycreativity #sandragalestudio #sandragaleillustration #makeartthatsells #matsbootcamp #matsbootcamp2020 #sparkleofhappiness
