Vanity is often scorned as an overindulgence in self-involvement but, can a certain amount of vanity be deemed as self-care? I'd advocate for it. So proud of this young man, college player @camsandland14 An incredible example of perseverance. He and his family have been working through the very unfortunate loss of his mother over the past year. He has also been dealing with a physical injury that he is finally getting over and now is able to swing the club pain free. Through his incredible will, strong faith, and great attitude here he is for a moment smiling as he tries to get in my pocket on the golf course today! The theme I heard from you was ‘release from obligation.’ Here’s some of what you had to say: * I’ve enjoyed having my husband home more. I’m super grateful that I’m not alone during this time- that I have the people I love around me. And at home church? That’s been amazing * Being able to focus on putting more effort into fewer things that are more important to me instead of all my effort into a million different things. More time to explore my hobbies and time to explore creative and different ways and approaches to doing my job better and more effectively. * Having unexpected time with my older kids at home. Being able to work from home after trying to get my boss to let me work from home for several months. Not having so many “obligations”, but having lots of family time. Finding time to cross stitch and read, things I haven’t had time to do for many years * The slowing down. Also the release of expectation to Go and Do * 'Focus' was the first word that sprang to my mind * I think people have been forced to slow down, spend time with family, appreciate simple forms of entertainment, and not take opportunities for granted * The little things that keep us “busy” every day are not always the most important. It’s been a great time to simplify and refocus. * For me it’s been a lot of family time playing games and watching movies, virtual chats and hangouts and games, and lots of time outside walking, hiking and playing pickleball :) Have I gotten lots of projects done or worked on self improvement? No 😂 but I’m not too worried about it. * Being able to pop my head into my partner’s office anytime I need a smile and watching her and our 1 year old wave at one another from the doorway. The theme I heard from you was ‘real connection.’ Here’s some of what you had to say: * Hmmmm I would say that I have been able to find more things that I enjoy doing like reading, or organizing... it’s also made me appreciate little things like moments with my baby boy or when it’s sunny outside, our car rides and my soda or coffee runs * Slow down, take things less serious, people are all the same * Supporting my wife with the newborn to help her maintain some level of sanity. In the past she has been left alone to care for each newborn without me. * Best is a tough call. One positive thing I think is a recognition how important real human connection is for us. Before this point I think many believed our advances in connecting with each other digitally somehow made us more connected. I think people in or near social emotional work saw the pitfalls but others didn't. But now I think it is clear that digital platforms can’t replace real human connection and frankly they are poor substitutes. Mindfulness - feels like a hot topic at the moment. Mindfulness is more than just a current trend, it has been around for centuries in the form of meditation and concentrated breathing. However, mindfulness doesn’t just need to be practiced in these forms, mindfulness is just being aware of the present moment without judgement. It’s referred to as ‘just being’. This place of just being is where we can reclaim our power - it can stop panic attacks, it can help us gain perspective over the situation and most importantly build our self awareness. Mindfulness is practiced in a lot of therapies in different forms and is used to help a person manage anxiety, depression and many other mental health disorders. For me, deep breathing and meditation can be too passive sometimes and I need something more to grapple on too. I’ve also been pushed to learn some new practices/ways of teaching- (that this caveman wasn’t real sharp in before!). And more than anything I’ve been able to just be with my humans a lot! Honestly I kinda love quarantine...don’t have to twist my arm to stay home and read books. But I think the best part has been spending more time together as a family. Trying to juggle the kids and get work done is a challenge but when we can let go of the idea of balance and just wake up and eat breakfast together and play and not feel like we are always rushing it’s pretty nice. The theme I heard from you was ‘things YOU want to do.’ Here’s some of what you had to say: * I haven’t decided if this is entirely a good thing, but it has definitely made me take more “me” time. Mandatory slow down and isolation helps me not feel sooo guilty about that * My connection with my immediate family * An opportunity to be still, no outside expectations/responsibilities which has caused me to consider what I WANT to keep in my life and what brings me joy as opposed to what I feel compelled/obligated to do * The simplicity of everything has helped put things in perspective. I spent the day wondering why I was so tired, ⁣ and I was beating myself up for it. ⁣ ⁣ sometimes it feels like i’m tired all the time,⁣ and that I never put anything towards productivity.⁣ ⁣ Some days are great, you know, ⁣ like you can get to Mars and back with the energy you feel. ⁣ ⁣ And on those days, I feel amazing, ⁣ accomplished⁣ resilient⁣ ⁣ Yet, I can’t give myself the same support when I don’t get a lot done,⁣ when all I can do for three to four days at a time is just have a snack and find the right song to cheer me up⁣ ⁣ When you really review, if your body is telling you you’re tired, ⁣ you’re tired⁣ plain and simple⁣ ⁣ it doesn’t matter what your productive side tells you is acceptable or not⁣ it doesn’t matter if you don’t feel like you should be doing more,⁣ that you haven’t done enough to feel tired.⁣ ⁣ those are the lies that seeped into your being when you were too young to challenge those more powerful opinions of others. ⁣ ⁣ but now you know that your emotions and your body are what speak truths every time⁣ it’s why we always say your feelings are valid ⁣ it’s why we say watch how your body reacts⁣ these are where we find our answers⁣ ⁣ so if our body says we’re tired, it means we’re tired⁣ ⁣ and in remembering that, I could see that right now, I’m being stretched in hundred different directions.⁣ So focused on where I wasn’t succeeding, I couldn’t see how much I was, that i’ve actually been juggling more balls than I can handle⁣ ⁣ but I have been able to keep it all together and running⁣ and i’ll continue to do so, but only as long as I honor the times I need rest⁣ and the rest will take as long as it takes, so our productive sides will just have to build a bridge and get over it.

This is a post about envy. I got really honest with myself, at the end of last year. A new level of honest upon this journey of mine. And you know what I discovered? I was spending some of my LIFE FORCE energy on envy and fear. What did I envy? My friend who seemed to just magnetically attract money, promotions, dates, trips, opportunities, the deep admiration of employers. My friend who seemed to just magnetically attract male attention. My friend who loooved her body. LOVED it. Couldn't get enough of it. Fed it good things, treated it well, moved it as it wanted to be moved, adorned it, celebrated it. And knew. Deeply knew. She was hot. A. F. My friend who was artistic and had managed to create a thriving BUSINESS around it, was her own boss, her own cheerleader, who spent that money joyously on restaurants and concerts and quality time with her lover and friends. My friend who had somehow risen above her childhood abuse and was thriving as an environmental biologist in a cute homey cabin in New Zealand with her beautiful fluffy dog and her gorgeous garden and her doting boyfriend. So here's what I knew. If I was envious, it meant I felt like they had something I couldn't have. Not just that I didn't have, but that I COULDN'T have. I knew I felt like I was sitting outside in the cold looking through a warmly lit window at the good life, and I was not allowed in. And I began to think... huh. That's really interesting--why is it that I believe I CAN'T have these things?? Why do I think they can't exist, for me? What do I think I'm lacking? I thought I had lost the resources to create the life I wanted. I thought I was so broken that I literally no longer had access to creating goodness. I thought abuse, rape, alcohol, eating disorders, drugs, addiction, ptsd, anxiety, panic, depression...I thought they meant I had lost the ability to thrive. No. I have the innate ability to thrive. It is in us all, to heal. It is in us all, to uncover and unleash the resources we thought we lost. When we feel envy, we can ask what the envy indicates we want. And then, we can be brave and ask ourselves what made us think we couldn't have it.
